Review:
To many audiences, The Lion King remains one of Walt Disney’s animated classics.
Even over 20 years later, The Lion King provides a host of good messages and vibrant animation.
Though Simba’s story is easy to understand, its theme about finding true purpose in life is well-handled.
It’s also a film that moves at a brisk pace, slowing down to build its characters through dialogue.
Much of this film’s first half focuses on the interactions with a young Simba (voiced by Jonathan Taylor Thomas) and his father Mufasa.
Voiced by the late James Earl Jones, these interactions are earnest and heartfelt.
Mufasa’s voice has a distinct heft that’s made possible by Jones’ distinct tone.
On the opposite end, Jeremy Irons’ Scar conveys a conniving, sinister tone. Each time he speaks, it’s clear that he’s scheming ways to overthrow Mufasa.
This film also has several other characters with distinct looks and personalities. While there are too many to mention here, each one has a purpose.
As the story progresses, Simba meets the dynamic pair of Timon (voiced by Nathan Lane) and Pumbaa (voiced by Ernie Sabella).
They provide much of the film’s humor and are fun additions to the film.
With Timon being a meerkat and Pumbaa being a warthog, this allows for some physical humor as well.
While some adults may find this humor irritating after a while, children will find it funny.
An area in which adults are children will find entertainment is The Lion King’s animation.
Walt Disney Animation Studios and director Roger Allers bring vibrancy and life to the environment. This also applies to its characters.
Much of the film’s events take place in the fictional area of the Pride Lands. Through the use of vibrant oranges, reds, and blues, the film's animation shines.
For a film that’s over 20 years old, the animation may look simplistic and lacking in detail to some.
Still, for those who can ignore those, it’s a film with many standout visual moments.
Contributing to the film’s visuals is German composer Hans Zimmer’s original score. He gives the film a majestic and even epic presence at times.
His track titled “Circle of Life” during the opening is an example of this. As the sun rises on the Pride Lands, Hans Zimmer’s chorus comes to life.
Along with the vibrant animation, this sets the tone for the film going forward. Zimmer also incorporates some horns during Simba’s fiery battle with Scar.
It’s an entertaining score that’s sure to impress Hans Zimmer enthusiasts.
Singer Elton John also presents an original track in the film titled “Can You Feel The Love Tonight”.
This plays during a scene with an adult Simba (voiced by Matthew Broderick) and his friend Nala (Moira Kelly) in the film.
Elton John also provides his contributions to the “Circle of Life” during the film’s opening.
Also contributing to that score are singers Carmen Twillie and Lebo M.
Alongside Hans Zimmer’s original score, this film's varied soundtrack should please audiences.
Conclusion:
To conclude, The Lion King remains a heartfelt watch that families can enjoy.
This film’s earnest message and vivid animation style will also entertain many classic Disney fans.
As a whole, The Lion King's story has a simplistic approach. Despite that, the film’s distinct characters prevent it from becoming too generic.
For instance, James Earl Jones provides heft as Mufasa. On the flip side, Jeremy Irons gives menace to Scar.
Others, such as Nathan Lane’s Timon and Ernie Sabella’s Pumbaa provide good comedic timing.
Although this style of humor may annoy some adults over time, children will find many laughs.
This film’s vibrant animation is sure to impress both adults and children.
Director Roger Allers and Walt Disney Animation Studios give the film life. This is regardless of its simplistic art style.
What also gives the film life is its original score and soundtrack.
German composer Hans Zimmer also brings his signature operatic style to proceedings. As a result, this makes for an entertaining listen.
Singers such as Elton John, Carmen Twillie, and Lebo M also enhance the musical proceedings.
As a whole, The Lion King’s vibrant animation style and distinctive characters are sure to entertain fans of classic Disney.
