Avengers: Endgame (2019) Movie Review
Synopsis:
After the Mad Titan, Thanos (Josh Brolin), eliminated half of Earth’s population, the Avengers sought to restore balance to the universe. Each remaining member must risk everything and undo this destruction.
Review:
Context:
With a total of three successful MCU films to their name, the Russo Brothers sought to conclude a 10+ legacy.
This included giving definitive endings to some well-established and respected characters.
This film may have many story-related problems, though it still serves as a conclusion that should please most fans.
Characters:
Endgame is for those who have supported this film series from beginning to end. As expected, there are callbacks to previous entries everywhere.
This film uses these to build upon existing character arcs. Its primary focus is on Iron Man and Captain America.
Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) and Captain America (Chris Evans) both receive definitive endings to their story arcs.
Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) also share good chemistry in their scenes together.
While most of them remain cared for, others look worse off in comparison.
For instance, Chris Hemsworth’s Thor undergoes some major changes in Avengers: Endgame. This is also the case with Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk.
As a whole, they make sense from a story perspective. Though this may be the case, they are either never expanded upon or portrayed as a joke.
Also, making her reappearance is Brie Larson as Captain Marvel. Brie, once again, delivers an uncharismatic and lifeless performance.
Story:
In other aspects, such as its storytelling and narrative, Endgame does struggle.
For instance, it introduces the concept of time travel. This is a concept that this universe has not attempted before.
As a result, certain ideas remain abandoned, whilst others feel tacked on.
Endgame's primary issues are its character changes and rushed concepts. Despite these flaws, the film succeeds in other areas.
Visuals, CGI, and action:
Endgame's visual effects provide a few standout moments that impress.
As a whole, these lack the creativity and flair of MCU entries such as Doctor Strange or Infinity War. Aside from that, they’re good.
Endgame’s action is also good, with much variety. Though the final act depends far too much on CGI, its spectacle should still impress fans.
Score/soundtrack:
Composer Alan Silvestri brings a consistent, satisfying score to conclude this saga.
It comes to life during the film’s climactic final battle against Thanos’ forces. It’s an entertaining score that long-time Avengers fans should be more than happy with.
Conclusion:
Avengers: Endgame is a film that should please most Marvel fans.
It's a film that's not as creative with its visuals or as well-paced compared to Infinity War. Despite this, the film isn’t without its moments.
Endgame may be worth it for those who have endured this ten-year journey.
With that in mind, it’s up to the future to decide if Marvel Studios can sustain it or witness an eventual decline.
